Google and Google Scholar Tips

Search guidance and tips for obtaining better results using Google and Google Scholar

RefWorks Set-up

  1. In Scholar, select Settings at upper right
  2. Scroll to Bibliographic Manager
  3. Select:Show link to import citations into:
  4. Select RefWorks from drop-down menu
  5. Hit SAVE button

Citations now have "Import into RefWorks" option (See below) -This link opens RefWorks and imports the reference.           

 

Google/ Google Scholar- Useful Limits

 Limits: domain and file type  

  • site:.edu (educational sites)
  • site:.org (non-profits)
  • site:.gov (governmental sites)
  • site:-.com (no .com sites) 
  • filetype:pdf  (pulls pdf's)
  • filetype:doc (pulls Word docs) 

Examples:

  • tsunami site:.gov -- (gov't sites on tsunamis) 
  • tsunami site:.gov OR site:.edu -- (gov't and educational sites on tsunamis) 
  • tsunamis filetype:pdf -- (pdf's on tsunamis)
  • online education filetype:ppt  -- (PowerPoints on online education)     

When you search using an operator, don't add any spaces between the operator and your query. A search for site:nytimes.com will work, but site: nytimes.com will not.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

What is Google Scholar?

  • Use Google Scholar as a handy meta-search engine to scour the scholarly literature
  • Down arrow in search box will provide Advanced Search functions
  • To link to Gutman library holdings, access Google Scholar on campus or -- remotely from any library website link to Google Scholar, like one below:

Search Google Scholar - View Full Text

Connect to the library’s full text resources via Full-Text@Gutman Library links. Select the red “Article” or “Journal” link from the resulting page. See also pdf or html links on the right column  of Google to get to full text.

Search Tips

Phrase searchingenclose phrases in quotes
